DHS reports the heat emergency has been activated. According to NWS, the current temperature is 88 degrees and the heat index is 97 degrees. Today will be mostly sunny, with a high near 92. Southwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Tonight, there is an expected chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Residents and visitors in the District can keep cool by staying in shade or air conditioning and drinking plenty of water. When the temperature or heat index reaches 95, residents are encouraged to take extra precautions against the heat. If they do not live in an air-conditioned building, they may take refuge at a District recreation facility, senior center or other air-conditioned building.
