Kenilworth Avenue NE Rehabilitation Project Scheduled to Begin

(Washington, DC) - The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin the rehabilitation of northbound Kenilworth Avenue NE on or about Thursday, August 18, 2016, weather permitting. The project extends from the East Capitol Street ramp (on I-295 northbound) to the CSX Railroad Bridge overpass, south of Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue NE.The project will address drainage and safety issues, and will include the installation of new catch basins, curbs and gutters, a new median, the replacement of existing safety fences, and upgrades to the street lighting system. Crews will also install new permanent Jersey barriers. The roadway will be milled and paved, and will receive new pavement markings and signage.The project is expected to take nine months to complete. The work will be performed during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday work is also allowed with prior approval.Periodic Night Detours will occur on eastbound East Capitol Street to northbound DC-295 ramp will be closed. Adequate detour signs will be posted to guide motorists to DC-295 north (Kenilworth Avenue). Also northbound DC-295 (Kenilworth Avenue) ramp to westbound Benning Road will be closed. Signs will be posted to guide motorists to westbound Benning Road NE.DDOT encourages the traveling public to stay alert as they move through this busy work zone area.
